Reading the plates from Ethereum…

STORMGLASS is an art project by GREENCROSS on Ethereum. Every day one new artwork, called a plate, goes on sale at 4:20pm Miami time. Its price starts high and halves every 2.4 hours until someone buys it.

FULL RULE ▸

Each plate is drawn by a program stored on Ethereum itself, and it is drawn again from live Ethereum data every time it is opened, so the same plate looks different from one day to the next. The series goes on for as long as plates keep selling. If a day ends unsold and the project's savings (the vault) cannot buy it, the series ends for good.

New to this? Ethereum is a public network that runs programs called smart contracts. ETH is its currency. To buy a plate you need a wallet (an app such as MetaMask, Rabby or Coinbase Wallet) holding some ETH. Every action also costs a small network fee, called gas. The words in this page are explained in the glossary, and the common questions in the FAQ.

This is the only place the rules are written out. Everything here is enforced by the STORMGLASS contract on Ethereum; nobody can change it.

PLATE ZERO · FINISHED

The first plate was sold by auction, starting October 12 2026. Bids had to be at least 0.05 ETH and at least 5% above the last, and every bid redrew the plate. In the first 24 hours an outbid bidder got their ETH back at once. The auction then ended at a secret moment inside the next 6 hours, picked from a block of Ethereum created after those 6 hours, so nobody could know it while bidding. The highest bid at that moment won; every other bid was refunded. Result: @eritaqua won at 0.069 ETH. That amount became the founding price, which sets the price of a seat (below) forever.

FOUNDERS’ DAY · FINISHED

For the 24 hours after the auction, anyone could pay any amount and get seats at the founding price, with no limit: 0.069 ETH for one seat, 0.138 ETH for two. No artwork came with it, only seats and a mark on Plate Zero. It ended on October 15 2026 at 04:35 UTC with no payments.

ONE PLATE A DAY

From October 15 2026 a new plate goes on sale every day at 4:20pm Miami time and stays on sale until the next 4:20pm. That is 20:20 UTC from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November (US summer time) and 21:20 UTC the rest of the year, so the day when the clocks change lasts 23 or 25 hours.

The price starts at 4 times the median of the last seven sale prices (the middle one, once they are sorted), or at the founding price if that is higher, plus anything paid by witnesses that day. Then it halves every 2.4 hours, smoothly, all day. By the close it is about a thousandth of where it started. There are no bids: the first person to pay the current price gets the plate.

WHAT THE BUYER GETS

The plate, as a token in their wallet. The right to choose tomorrow’s plate from 32 options shown on this page; the choice is drawn into every later plate. And seats: the price paid divided by the founding price, at most one seat a day. Paying 0.069 ETH or more gives one full seat; paying 0.0345 ETH gives half a seat.

WITNESSES

Anyone can pay any amount toward the plate on sale without buying it. A witness gets seats on the same terms (at most one seat a day per wallet, counting purchase and witness payments together) and a mark cut into that plate in the accent colour. What a witness pays is added to that day’s starting price, so the current price goes up by the amount halved once for every 2.4 hours since the open: 0.1 ETH paid 12 hours in adds about 0.003 ETH.

IF NOBODY BUYS

When a day closes unsold, the vault buys the plate at the reference price: the median of the last seven sales, or a tenth of the founding price if that is higher. The vault keeps that plate forever; it can never be sold. A random choice picks tomorrow’s plate.

THE END: THE TOMBSTONE

If the vault holds less than the reference price when a day closes unsold, that plate becomes the Tombstone and the series is over. No new plates, no more buying or witnessing. Every plate already sold keeps its owner, can still be traded, and still draws itself from live data. Seats can still collect what they earned. The vault’s ETH stays in the contract forever.

A WORKED EXAMPLE: DAY 1 (OCTOBER 15 TO 16 2026)

The only sale so far is Plate Zero at 0.069 ETH, so the median is 0.069 ETH and day 1 starts at 4 × 0.069 = 0.276 ETH.

The vault holds 0.0207 ETH and the reference price is 0.069 ETH. So if day 1 goes unsold, the vault cannot buy it and day 1 becomes the Tombstone. The same is true of day 2: whatever day 1 sells for, the vault will still hold less than the new reference price. From day 3 the vault can start to cover unsold days, depending on prices. Anyone can add ETH to the vault by sending it straight to the STORMGLASS contract.

A PLATE

A plate is one artwork: a single object (the subject) under a sky, turning in a loop of 36 frames, printed in a limited palette of colours and dots (dither). Most subjects are one of 41 named forms: monuments such as an obelisk, a gate, a ziggurat or a sundial; geometric solids; and forms that grow, such as a tree, a nest or quartz. About 1 plate in 4 is an assembly of several of them. 1 plate in 100 is the STORMGLASS itself: a glass tube with weather inside it. Plate Zero and the Tombstone have subjects of their own.

NOT A FILE

No image of a plate is stored anywhere. Each plate is a number (its seed). The program that turns the seed into a picture is stored on Ethereum, in pieces, and the GLASS contract refuses to work unless every piece matches a fixed fingerprint. When a plate is opened, your browser runs that program and draws it. Marketplaces show a plain title card as the image; the live plate is in the animation.

THE GLASS

The glass is the page every plate opens on: the plate, full screen, with a menu behind a tap. From the menu you can switch the shape (square, tall 9:16 or wide 16:9), see the seed, and save the loop as a GIF. The square print is 1,080 × 1,080 pixels. Open an example glass ↗

WHAT A TOKEN RECORDS

Each plate is an ERC-721 token (an NFT: a one-of-a-kind record on Ethereum of who owns it). Its listed traits are its name, the price it sold for, the number of witnesses, the buyer’s pick for the next day, and whether the vault holds it. The artwork is CC0: GREENCROSS has given up copyright, so anyone may copy and reuse the images.

Every time a plate is opened on this site or on the glass, the program reads these values from Ethereum at that moment and draws them into the plate. One row per input.

FULL RULE ▸

WEATHEREthereum’s base fee: the going price of one unit of network work, in gwei (a billionth of an ETH). Under 0.04 gwei: snow. Under 0.1: clear. Under 0.2: overcast. Under 0.5: fog. Under 2: rain. 2 or more: storm. In a STORMGLASS it also sets how high the crystals rise.

HUNGERThe blob fee: the price other networks pay to store data on Ethereum, in gwei. From about 0.003 up to 3 gwei, the small screen inside the picture flickers and breaks more.

HOURThe time in Miami, summer time included. The sun moves from left to right across the day and goes under the ground at night, when the moon comes out.

MOONThe moon’s phase, worked out from the average length of a lunar month. It sets the moon’s shape.

TIDEWorked out from the moon phase: highest at new and full moon. It moves the water on plates that stand on water.

WINDNot live data: a value fixed once a day from the plate’s own seed. It slants the rain and snow and moves the fog.

FLOODThe price of ETH against its average over the last 7 days, from the ETH/USDC pool on Uniswap (a trading contract on Ethereum). One reading is taken each day when a new day starts. Water rises from a 4% fall and covers the base at a 16% fall. Dry until the first reading.

COUNTERFEITHow far USDC and USDT, two tokens meant to be worth one dollar each, are from 1 to 1 in their Uniswap pool. From 0.06% apart the plate prints twice, slightly out of line; fully at 0.5%.

PULSETime since anyone last paid anything to the contract (a bid, pledge, purchase or witness). As it nears 24 hours, the screen inside the picture breaks up.

AGEDays since the auction started on October 12 2026, up to a year. The horizon sinks as the series ages.

LAMPSWeeks the current owner has held the plate, up to 7: one lamp lit per week. Back to zero when it changes hands.

WEIGHTHow much ETH the owner’s wallet holds, up to 10 ETH. The more ETH, the less haze.

WITNESS MARKSOne mark per witness payment along the plate’s edge, in the accent colour. Up to 200.

A seat is a share of future payments, kept as a number next to your wallet address in the contract. It is not a token: it cannot be sold, sent or moved to another wallet, and it never expires. 20% of every purchase, witness payment and vault purchase is shared among all seats existing at that moment, in proportion to how many each wallet holds. A payment does not pay the seats it creates. Seats get nothing from Plate Zero’s sale, from resale royalties or from ETH sent to the vault. While no seats exist, that 20% goes to the vault instead. Seats are not an investment and nothing is promised: they only earn while people keep paying for plates.

Your earnings wait in the contract until you collect them. CLAIM sends them to your wallet. They are also sent automatically whenever your wallet buys or witnesses. WITHDRAW appears only if the contract once tried to send you ETH and your wallet could not accept it.

Every purchase, witness payment and vault purchase is split this way by the contract. Plate Zero’s sale was split 70% to the artist and 30% to the vault. The artist’s 70% is sent to the artist’s payout address in the same transaction. The seats’ 20% waits in the contract until each seat holder claims it. The vault’s 10% stays in the contract, and nothing can take it out except buying unsold plates. If the contract ever cannot send ETH to a wallet (a refund, a payout), the amount is kept for that wallet to withdraw. The 6.9% royalty on resales is a request to marketplaces through the EIP-2981 standard; the contract cannot force them to pay it.

Nobody. The STORMGLASS contract has no administrator and no settings anyone can change: the prices, the split, the clock and the payout address were fixed when it was deployed. It answers “owner” with the artist’s address only so that marketplaces know whose collection it is; that gives no powers. The contracts and the drawing program are all on Ethereum, and their source code is published and verified on Etherscan, where anyone can read it. This website is only a window: it reads the contracts through public Ethereum nodes and sends your transactions through your wallet. If it went offline, the plates, the sale and the payouts would carry on, and anyone could use the contracts directly.

SMALL WEATHER is a separate, earlier collection: a small animated loop, 96 by 96 pixels, made for each collector who answered GREENCROSS before STORMGLASS began, drawn from their own wallet address and stored on Ethereum. Each one can only be claimed by the wallet it was made for, for free apart from the network fee. GREENCROSS may also send an unclaimed one to its owner. HOW DO I COLLECT A PLATE?

1. Get a wallet app and some ETH on Ethereum mainnet. 2. Open this page between 4:20pm Miami time and the next 4:20pm. 3. Below the plate, choose tomorrow’s plate from the 32 options. 4. Press COLLECT, check the amount in your wallet and confirm. Your wallet asks for about 10% more than the price shown; what is not needed comes straight back in the same transaction. If someone else bought first, your transaction fails and costs only the network fee.

WHAT WALLET DO I NEED?

Any Ethereum wallet that works in your browser, such as MetaMask, Rabby or Coinbase Wallet. On a phone, open dithervoid.art inside your wallet app’s own browser. Press CONNECT at the top of the page.

WHY DOES MY WALLET WARN ME?

Some wallets flag every payment to a new contract that passes money straight on, and STORMGLASS sends 70% of each payment to the artist in the same transaction. The contracts are verified on Etherscan and the warning has been reported as a mistake. Before you confirm, check that the address your wallet shows is 0xCf5E…064C.

WHAT DO I ACTUALLY OWN?

A plate is a token on Ethereum that records your wallet as its owner. You can keep it, sell it or send it like any NFT. The artwork is CC0, so owning the token does not give you exclusive rights to the image.

CAN I LOSE MONEY ON A SEAT?

A seat is not an investment and pays only if people keep paying for plates. It cannot be sold or moved, and if the series ends it stops earning. You may never get back what you paid. Pay only what you are happy to spend on the art.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I’M OUTBID?

The daily sale has no bids: the first person to pay gets the plate. If two people try at the same time, the one recorded first on Ethereum wins and the other transaction fails, costing only the network fee. Plate Zero’s auction is over.

WHAT IS CC0?

A public licence by which the artist gives up copyright. Anyone may copy, change, sell or build on the images, with no permission needed.

WHAT IF THIS SITE GOES OFFLINE?

Nothing that matters is on this site. The sale, the plates, the program that draws them and all the money are in the contracts on Ethereum, and anyone can use them through Etherscan or any other Ethereum tool.
